Huliko‘a Kaiāulu Scholar Speaker Series 9/16/14, 5:30-8pm

The Huliko‘a Kaiāulu scholar speaker series will continue on September 16 at the Community Learning Center at Nānākuli. Scholars Kamuela Werner and Alika Maunakea, PhD. will share their research on Native Hawaiian health.

Hulikoʻa Kaiāulu – Explorations of the Kaiāulu breeze – gives Wai‘anae Coast ‘ohana the opportunity to embrace higher education and celebrate examples of advanced learning in the community.

The speaker series was developed through a partnership between Kamehameha Schools, the UH Hawai‘inuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge, and MA‘O Organic Farms.

September’s scholars will speak on the following research topics:

  • Kamuela Werner will present “Using Data to Empower Kanaka Maoli Health Agendas.” Werner, whose ‘ohana is from Nānākuli and Mā‘ili, currently serves as a community engagement research assistant for the University of Hawai‘i John A. Burns School of Medicine.
  • Alika Maunakea, Ph.D. will present “Links Between Native Hawaiian Concepts of Health and Biomedical Research.” Born and raised in Wai‘anae, Dr. Maunakea serves as an assistant professor in the Epigenomics Research program at the University of Hawai‘i John A. Burns School of Medicine.

The session will be held on Tuesday, September 16, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at KS’ Community Learning Center at Nānākuli located at 89-101 Farrington Hwy.

A free, simple dinner will be provided and representatives from higher education will be present. To better prepare for these events, an RSVP would be greatly appreciated. Please email kapua@ksbe.edu or call 668-1517 for updates or more information.
